What is TEF Canada?

TEF Canada (Test d'Évaluation de Français pour le Canada) is the official French language proficiency test recognized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It is one of two approved French language tests for Canadian immigration — the other being TCF Canada. TEF Canada is administered by the Centre de Langue Française de la Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie de Paris (CCIP).

Who Needs TEF Canada?

You need TEF Canada if you are applying for Canadian permanent residency through Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades, or Canadian Experience Class), a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) that requires language proof, Canadian citizenship, or any other immigration pathway that requires demonstrated French language proficiency.

Exam Structure

The TEF Canada exam consists of four mandatory components: Listening Comprehension (40 min, 60 questions), Reading Comprehension (60 min, 50 questions), Written Expression (60 min, 2 writing tasks), and Oral Expression (35 min, 3 speaking tasks). Each component is scored on a scale of 0–360 and converted to a CLB level.

Expert Advice

Top Preparation Strategies

Start with a Diagnostic Test

Before beginning your preparation, take a full diagnostic test to identify your current CLB level and the specific areas where you need the most improvement.

Practice All Four Components

Many students focus only on reading and writing. Don't neglect speaking and listening — they carry equal weight in your final CLB score.

Study Under Timed Conditions

Time pressure is one of the biggest challenges in TEF Canada. Practice regularly with a timer to build speed and accuracy under exam conditions.

Get Feedback on Writing & Speaking

These components require subjective evaluation. Work with a certified instructor who can provide detailed feedback on your written and oral expression.

Build Vocabulary Systematically

Focus on the vocabulary themes most commonly tested in TEF Canada: work, health, environment, technology, and social issues.

Take Full Mock Exams

In the final weeks before your exam, take at least 2–3 full-length mock exams under real exam conditions to build stamina and confidence.
