If you're applying for Canadian permanent residency or citizenship, you've likely encountered the term “TEF Canada.” Understanding this exam is critical — it directly affects your immigration eligibility and Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.
What is TEF Canada?
TEF Canada (Test d'Évaluation de Français pour le Canada) is a standardized French language proficiency exam specifically designed for Canadian immigration purposes. It is recognized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as an approved language test for demonstrating French proficiency.
The exam assesses your ability in four key language skills: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written expression, and oral expression. Each component is scored separately and then converted to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level.
TEF Canada Exam Components
Listening Comprehension
40 minutes60 questionsTests your ability to understand spoken French in various contexts — conversations, announcements, interviews, and news reports.
Reading Comprehension
60 minutes50 questionsAssesses your ability to understand written French texts including articles, letters, advertisements, and official documents.
Written Expression

TEF Canada Scoring & CLB Equivalencies
